Movies of 2011!

Holy Cow I am Starting Early this year. So a quick recap if you haven't read these post of mine before. Every year, well this is just the second year. I challenge myself to watch 100 movies i haven't seen before. It sounds like that would be an easy task, it is easy, but time consuming. I run into to life difficulties though. It's not always easy to find time in between work, school, life stuff, house stuff, wife stuff and stuff to get these movies watched. For instance it's almost October and have to get in 23 movies before the end of the year. This number isn't as bad as last year, but I have lots going on. A new work adventure that will take up a lot of my time, we are moving, so not exactly a good time to watch a flick.

Now there are rules to this. simple rules but rules. I can watch any type of movie. Action, Drama, Documentary, Comedy, or my favorite Horror, well not Horror I guess Stupid Horror is the best way to describe it. I have lots of nights with my friends watching movies that are well interesting. I have to count a movie if i Watched over half of it. Because lets face it, some movies aren't worth finishing. Also the most important Rule. It has to be new to me. I could not have seen this movie before. So you won't catch any repeats on my list. If you want to find a certain movie you will have to go back through blogs, because I won't be covering it again. This makes the blog a little wishy washy, because I watch movie's from all eras, I haven't been good with old movies yet, but that's why I do this list so that I can do old movies when I have time. I have a huge list of Older Classics that i need to get too. I also don't count remakes, If I get the new Star Wars DVD's I won't count them as new movies, I have seen them.

Ok Rules over. I base them on a scale of 1 being horribly unwatchable to 5 which is add this to your collection. So the scale is officially below. If you want to see it again you will have to search through my blogs to find it. Which I encourage you to read last years movies there were some great ones in there. So Scale.
0.) If a Movie gets a zero than it's not even really out there at all. It doesn't breath the movie air.

1. )Don't watch this. Even if someone says it wasn't that bad, they are trying to trick you into wasting your life as they did. Don't WATCH THIS MOVIE. EVER. EVER.

2.) This movie has a few redeeming factors, you wouldn't be wasting your time, but I don't recommend you seeing this.

3.) It's ok. There is nothing stand outish about it, it's a run of the mill movie, but hasn't quite made it to the film category. Maybe you should even stop by a redbox or put it in your Queue.

4.) It's good, not great, I suggest this movie overall to anyone who would like to watch it. I think the Movie has what it takes. Rent it, Buy the DVD, I wouldn't run out and get the Blu-ray or Special editions though. But by all means go see this movie.

5.) HOLY CRAP THIS MOVIE IS AWESOME!! No Flaws outright, and you should most definitely add this to your collection, because no collection is complete without it. You Should Not Turn Down a Chance To See This.

Ok, so I have to admit my four and five's tend to tick people off. Some of my 3's people thought were wonderful. I don't give out a lot of fives. If it's a four, that means I really liked it. So if you see one of your movies that you adore with a three or a four. (that rhymed) I just don't think it's amazing quality. Still really good, but not stand out from the crowd good. So on with my first 5 movies of 2011!!!

(1) Tangled (2010)

My wife Anne really wanted to see this. You know what... So did I. I love Disney, if you don't you are lying to yourself. Disney gives quality Movies. What I think is funny is I just spent the last paragraph talking about how I don't give out 5's well newsflash this one gets a solid 5. Maybe I started the year off with the best movie out of them all. Music check, some of the best Disney scores of all time. Comedy, OH YEAH. I was laughing so hard at the now coined "Bipolar scene" I cried I laughed, I may have even peed a little. So hilarious. Romance, of course It's Disney. It was childish romance, but that's exactly what you expect from Disney. It really was the perfect Disney movie it covered all the basis. Drama, Depression, Evil, Magic, goons, and visuals were just outstanding. the Lantern scene come on if you didn't well up a little, what is wrong with you. I don't want to ruin this for people who haven't seen this, but wow, this movie is one of the greats. I strongly urge you to get around with your guy friends and put this on and really appreciate it for what it is. laugh out loud glory. I honestly have to say, it surpassed all expectations and quickly became one of my favorite films of all time.

(2) Leap Year (2010)

Right of the box I want to say this was the Amy Adams movie, not the Spanish movie of the same name. Again, this was an Anne pick. Solely an Anne pick I might Add, I wasn't against it by any means, because I am open to anything, especially with Amy Adams because she is the new Meryl Strep. Matthew Goode was great in this, Stole the show quickly. It's a run of the mill romantic comedy. Boy and Girl are getting married. Fly to foreign country (Ireland this time) Girl finds local boy, finds out soon to be Hubby isn't great, but loves local chap, Love, marriage. The whole nine yards. However, this had a few nice twist. I thought the comedy was with good timing. Adams was good, which was unusual, because she is generally amazing. I thought the chemistry between Goode and Adams was on point. The car part was the height of Comedy. I just thought it was a little lop sided and you really didn't a good feeling for the whole of the story. I need to explain that better. I never really felt like Adams had it for the Goode character, the A Ha Moment came far to late in the film and there wasn't any real sexual tension, just tension. For that reason I can't give this movie out as an active recommendation. However, Ireland look beautiful. So I give it a point for Ireland. A point for Adams and Goode, and one last point for the twist's that I am not giving away. So a 3 cliche clover in Ireland out of 5.

(3) Prince of Persia (2010)
The second Disney movie out of 3, i assure you this trend doesn't continue. The Previews didn't look bad, Anne and I both really wanted to see this, so when we curled up to watch this it was a positive experience going in, coming out. Well, less than enthusiastic. Jake Gyllenhaal in my opinion didn't pull this off. He wasn't rustic enough. He didn't pull off a distinctly Arabic character. They really should have cast someone who was authentic it distracted from the movie. Way more than something like this usually bothers me. You're not going to cast a skinny Irishman to play Shaq in a Shaqumentary and you shouldn't cast a skinny American to play Dastan who is a distinct Arabic character. It didn't work. it shouldn't have worked. The story was a mash up well thought out, but poorly executed mess. Gemma Arterton was breathtaking and a good fit. Ben Kingsley actually didn't do a good job, it's like you could see the failure in expected in his eyes. I just don't think this film had what it needed. I like Gyllenhaal overall, but this wasn't a role for him. Most Video Game movies disappoint this as no surprise did that. I have to say the effects were extremely well done and the battles were well choreographed that helps the score a bit. You should see this movie just for some of the effects with the sand of time, and to make fun of Jake as he stumbles around looking stupid in Arabic clothing. A shaky 3 out of 5. So close to giving a 2.

(4) Up in the Air (2010)

George Clooney and I have a love hate relationship. Either I love his movies or I hate them. This one goes into the Love category. I don't think it was his performance although he had his moments. It was the pacing and shots in this movie. The lack of Dialogue was the best part. The unsaid points that were made sold this. It was one of those movies where the silence takes you by surprise. Let the Music do the work. The storyline was original. It was Americana. I liked the attitude the movie gave and I liked the supporting actress Anna Kendrick. I thought she lent a comedic overtone that the movie tone desperately had to have, especially as the turns came in the movie as Alex Goran played beautifully by Vera Farmiga displayed her colors. There are some short comings. Few as they are, they are still there. I thought the movie ran on about twenty minutes too long. There were scenes regardless of how cute they were, just were not important and drug out a bit too long. This is the one thing that annoys me about movies, especially the so called main stream but still quirky films like this one. Sometimes, just leave it unsaid. It's perfectly cool to not over emphasize a character's sorrow or happiness. Just let it flow, don't use filler to hit that two hour mark that you feel that you have to hit to have a good movie. If it doesn't flow than it takes away. This was my one problem with this. I got up and wondered around a few times because it just dragged by so freaking slow. It wasn't boring, just slow and for that you only get a 4 where you could have had a 5.

(5) The Proposal (2009)
There isn't a lot about this movie I didn't like. That being said, I don't think it was that great. It was perfectly cute, dull at times, but fun. I think the Woods scene and the shower slash working out scene was also funny, but it was a typical romantic comedy. Unlike some that will come later on the list it didn't really offer something that wasn't in the genre before. I liked the Sandra Bullock being the boss thing. She looked really good in this movie, where a few previous movies she had started to show her age. She was sexy in this one, which took me by surprise, because usually once you have lost it it's gone, I guess she still has it. Plus, Ryan Reynolds are you kidding me, I love this guy. His delivery is spot on great. It's that smerk that really sells it. Of course it's his specific delivery that makes his movie's his movies. I mean Reynolds stole Wolverine Origins from Jackman, Blade 3 from Wesley, and Smokin Aces from Piven. End of story Reynolds is the man. This isn't the only movie he is in on this list being the nerd I am you know Green Lantern is popping up somewhere. However, Bullock and Reynolds alone can't save this movie from my 3 out of 5. It's not that it's bad, it's not good either, It just is. that's why it goes in the middle spot.

That's it for now. I will do plenty more soon enough. These first 5 aren't exactly out there or unexpected, for that I apologize, but i did watch some rather strange quirky and soul raping movies. Stay tuned for the likes of the "homage to No reason" The country side of Scandinavian and it's governments big secret. A few rednecks in a barrel plus a sprint to the finish line and a few personal geek out nerdy documentary's that you probably won't ever want to watch. Oh , and a Poop ton of Super Hero movie's. Thor, Green Lantern, Captain America, Emerald Corps, Green Hornet, Scott Pilgrim and Grown ups.
